Stellate Ganglion Injections
Specialized treatment for complex regional pain syndrome and neuralgia
About Stellate Ganglion Injections
Stellate ganglion injections are a specialized procedure where local anesthetic is injected near the stellate ganglion, a collection of sympathetic nerves located in the neck at the level of the C6-C7 vertebrae. These nerves are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls many involuntary bodily functions. By temporarily blocking these nerves, the injection can interrupt abnormal pain signals, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow to the affected area, providing relief for conditions like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), post-herpetic neuralgia, and certain types of facial and upper extremity pain.
Rapid Relief
Can provide immediate improvement in symptoms for many patients
Brief Procedure
Typically performed in 15-20 minutes as an outpatient
Sympathetic Reset
Helps normalize sympathetic nervous system function
Who Can Benefit
Stellate ganglion injections are particularly beneficial for patients with:
- Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) affecting the upper limbs or face
- Neuralgia (nerve pain) not responding to other treatments
- Sympathetically maintained pain conditions with symptoms like burning pain, skin color changes, temperature changes, or swelling
- Certain types of facial pain or headaches
- Herpes zoster (shingles) affecting the face or upper limbs
- Raynaud's phenomenon or other vascular insufficiency conditions
Dr. Hemani will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if stellate ganglion injections are appropriate for your specific condition and symptoms.
Expected Effects and Side Effects
Stellate ganglion injections produce several characteristic effects and potential side effects that patients should be aware of:
Expected Effects (Signs of Successful Block)
Horner's Syndrome
Temporary drooping of the eyelid (ptosis), constriction of the pupil (miosis), and reduced sweating on the treated side of the face. This is a normal and expected effect that indicates a successful block.
Increased Skin Temperature
The affected arm or hand will typically feel warmer due to increased blood flow from vasodilation.
Pain Relief
Reduction in pain, burning sensations, and hypersensitivity in the affected area.
Nasal Congestion
Temporary stuffiness in the nostril on the treated side is common.
Potential Side Effects
Hoarseness
Temporary voice changes due to the proximity of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
Difficulty Swallowing
Some patients experience temporary dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
Shortness of Breath
Rarely, patients may experience a sensation of shortness of breath if the phrenic nerve is affected.
Injection Site Bruising
Temporary bruising or soreness at the injection site may occur.
Most side effects are temporary and resolve within hours as the anesthetic wears off. Serious complications are rare when performed by an experienced physician using imaging guidance.
